MONOLITH!

I'm still working the kinks out on this playlist (e.g. Ida Maria isn't even playing the show anymore, so I still need to take her out of it), but I figured since the time is near I'd go ahead and post 'er!

Monolith is at Red Rocks September 12th & 13th. If you've never been to Red Rocks it's a breathtaking venue, even though the insane amount of stairs might make it less than ideal for a festival. They have a festival anyway, though, and I love them for it. I am completely beside myself with excitement for next Friday when I rendezvous with my E Dat at Denver International Airport! Then we shall overdose on indie rock, and it will be glorious.

We will be staying in this adorable cabin....

...and seeing these wonderful bands!!

So Far Away!

Sorry for my lengthy absence - I've been working on a Monolith playlist to post, as I am so excited for Monolith I am practically peeing my pants! I kept telling myself I'd finish it and post it, but since I still haven't finished it, I thought it would be good to post SOMETHING.

This song is about a long-distance relationship. It seems ages ago that I was in one, but when I was I listened to this song a lot. It's sad-happy. I like sad-happy music. :)

Hippie Spotlight: Xavier Rudd

I've decided to start a recurring 'hippie spotlight' on here. Because I love hippies.

So, the very first hippie spotlight shall be shone on Xavier Rudd.

Recipe:
Mix together Paul Simon, Dave Matthews, and Jack Johnson.
Add lap steel.
Sprinkle on some didgeridoo.

Voila!

Have You Heard?

It's officially out: The rumored band that brings together legends Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, & John Paul Jones is indeed real. They are called Them Crooked Vultures, and they are doing a debut show at midnight August 9th in Chicago, a Lollapalooza after-show of sorts. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, and are available exclusively online. Become their fan on facebook, follow their tweets, myspace them...whatever social network you use, for more information. An album & tour are expected to follow.

a) I am SO much more distraught now that I ended up not going to Lollapalooza.

b) How FUCKING AWESOME is this going to be! Talk about a supergroup! I haven't been this stoked about a band in while! Probably since Band of Horses, who I will also be missing this weekend by not going to Chicago.

Sigh.

Happy birthday to me.

Cover Me

Much of my life I have been morally opposed to cover songs. Last week, I was ranting to Boyfriend about it...

If you're covering songs, you're not a real musician! You're just a copycat! If you can't write your own stuff, get a different job! Quit exploiting people who are too stupid to even realize you're doing it!

So he just stands there, looking crestfallen. I realize I've said the wrong thing, seeing as he plays guitar and sings but hasn't been in a band who does original material in quite some time...so I backpedal.

I mean, if you're performing them live it's okay - please the crowd, let them sing along... It's the people who are recording the covers that piss me off!

Well, it is with great reluctance that I will admit...Not all cover songs suck.

Tell me your favorites!

This one's for you, Boyfriend.

I love the 90's!

The 90s are when I first started really getting into music. I was about 8, and Kansas City had this kickass alternative station, 107.3 The X. Ahhhh, those were the days... I remember my first 'real' concert, in 1995 for my 10th birthday, the day before I started at a new school out in the boondocks - Cranberries & Toad the Wet Sprocket. Dolores O'Riordan was wearing a hideous pink metallic dress against her fire-engine red pixie cut. Oh, how I wanted to be her!

I had originally planned to whittle this much further than I did. I tried for a week and a half, and this is as small as I'm willing to go - 60 songs. Any less than that just doesn't do 90s alternative justice. I tried to remove the super commonplace 90s music 'list' songs....Enjoy!

The Shape of My Heart

...is undoubtedly an acoustic guitar. And when I'm happiest is when it's played with a slide. It can be glass, or plastic, a Coricidin bottle, a Bic or a Zippo....It matters not!

I know this list is a bit long, but the original one was 50 and it was enough of a struggle to get it here! The list is anything slide. Acoustic, electric, lap steel, you name it. Some songs you'll know, some you probably won't...but I love them all.

Ironically, what prompted me to use this theme was that I was listening to Tyler Ramsey yesterday, and the song Chinese New Year came on. It's just an instrumental song, pretty much entirely slide guitar, and I love it. And of course when I started making this playlist, it's not on imeem. That's okay, though, here's plenty of other stuff!
